The Pet Economy

Americans now spend $41 billion a year on their pets—more than the gross domestic product of all but 64 countries in the world, and our GDP last year was about $596 billion.. Ouch!

Such an interesting article from business week :D

Not surprisingly, the trend is pretty much the same where I live and presumably globally. Pet’s business has cherished its rapid and enormous growth over the past decade. When alfalfa was bought, back in 1996, a visit to dog grooming would have cost no more than 250 baht for a fancy coat trimming and a wash. Today, 450 baht service only allows a straight cut!, an additional 50-100 baht is required for bathing. I might as well buy a dog clipper for 1200 baht and DIY alfalfa for a few times to breakeven .. hehe.

The industry growth is not only exemplified by the escalation of charges for grooming service, but also in other business such as pet’s food, fashion, spa, and fitness. Private dog’s parks can be ubiquitously spotted in Bangkok and other cities, and believe it or not, the price of admission ranges from 100 baht (per visit) to 80,000 baht for an annual membership. Wow!

This is a good business opportunity na ja Velentini!!!

On speaking with many dog owners I met at Bene’s school, the so-called human parents would have taken their dogs for swimming at least once a week. Swimming is a wonderful exercise for dogs, no doubt about it. The pool fee is 180 baht for each dog and little did you know I myself only pay 40 baht for each swimming session ^^’.

So… how much does it cost me?? Good question! Hehehe… because.. the answer is …..

NONE!!

We always have fun no matter where we are as long as we are together!! Therefore, exercises in an ordinary human recreational park, playing fetch at home, jogging around our neighbourhood, and sporadic trips out of town are more than enough, right Bianca?? Hehe … according to the philosophy of moderation espoused :D
